Life of pi illustrated5/30/2023 It's a story, as one character puts it, to make you believe in God. Life of Pi is at once a realistic, rousing adventure and a meta-tale of survival that explores the redemptive power of storytelling and the transformative nature of fiction. The Japanese authorities who interrogate Pi refuse to believe his story and press him to tell them "the truth." After hours of coercion, Pi tells a second story, a story much less fantastical, much more conventional-but is it more true? Note Citation formats are based on standards as of July 2022. Signal Boost by Alyssa Cole5/30/2023 Signal Boost is the second book in Cole’s Off the Grid series, the first being Radio Silence, which I REALLY liked. As they walk, they get to know each other, and their secrets come out in ways that bring them closer but have the scary consequence of showing their true colors, amidst the terror that is the new world in which they are living. Mikhail reveals he’s on his way to a nearby university to find a professor he knows who may have some answers about why the world seems to be ending, and John decides to take up the adventure and accompany him on his journey. When a random guy, Mikhail, is caught raiding their garden, John’s parents offer him food and shelter in their home, while John finds himself rapidly developing a crush on this mysterious stranger. After something happened to make all technology stop working, John and his family have survived the apocalypse in their safe cabin with plenty of food and water, at least for a while. Raising lazarus dopesick5/30/2023 The recent decision by opioid-maker Endo to use bankruptcy suggests that Purdue is viewed as a template for opioid makers seeking to limit liability for their role in contributing to the crisis. Lazarus contrasts two very different faces of the opioid crisis: the gritty front lines of harm reduction and the rarified chambers of the United States Bankruptcy Court in New York, where Purdue Pharma-the company generally thought to have triggered the crisis-and its owners, the wealthy and secretive Sackler family, seek to buy their way out of liability for their role in it. Reporter Beth Macy has chronicled the causes, effects and cures of this crisis in the award-winning Dopesick (now an Emmy-winning series on Hulu) and in her new book, Raising Lazarus. Over one million Americans have died by overdose since 1996, at least half due to prescription opioids. Jerry craft class act5/30/2023 Characters are expressively drawn and clearly delineated. I will still continue with the series but I do hope that the plot and pacing get better. Art also felt different and not good different. There are also so many other characters that aren't really used well in the story. Like I said before, I don't think Drew was the best lead as he's way too judgy. Jordan, Drew and Liam stay the main friends in most of this book but their friendship also seemed too weak. It started off slow and going in one direction but then as if the author couldn't decide what to do from there just zigzags and never gets anywhere with the point or the plot. Whilst this tackles serious and everyday issues, this lacked plot and focus. This series focuses on racism, prejudice and how kids of diverse cultures struggle with belonging. Much like the first novel, this starts off really slow but where the New Kid actually picked up pace from the middle, this lacked pace and plot throughout.Ĭlass Act focuses mostly on Drew, Jordan's friend and I have to say Drew wasn't the best lead. I liked the first novel but this was not as good. Class Act is the second graphic novel in the New Kid series. Flirting in italian by lauren henderson5/30/2023 The cruel queen Anais has stolen the throne and now wants Luce dead, even though she realizes the power of Luce's voice that can do something only few mermaids have accomplished. Luce now lives alone in the ocean after she leaves the troubled tribe, but she is needed back again. We have lingered in the chambers of the sea,īy sea girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown, Those voices are designed to lure people into the water and drown in Waking Storms by Sarah Porter. They seem so wonderful with their ageless faces and ever enchanting voices except for one thing. They are mermaids with beautiful tails that never age. Review: How would you feel if it was almost suicide to go out on the ocean in a ship or boat, and you didn't even realize it? What if humans really are so blind that they cannot see what is going on? What if there really is a creature that isn't exactly human? What if that creature makes such a large impact on life as we know it, all for revenge? And only a handful of these creatures realize it is wrong when the others still hunger for vengeance? Dorian is the only human in the world who knows that something more powerful than humans lies in the oceans. Thammavongsa is a patient stylist who gets at universal truths through the particulars of her life. The author’s characters emerge from a very specific background she grew up in Toronto and was born of Lao parents in a refugee camp in Thailand in a recent Paris Review interview she explains that, “Most people are recognized as a citizen by the country they are born in, but in a refugee camp, you are considered stateless.” That sense of not belonging runs throughout these highly efficient and effective stories, even when they don’t directly address the immigrant experience. With spare prose and a subtle mastery of tone, poet and essayist Souvankham Thammavongsa captures this alienation time and heartbreaking time again in How to Pronounce Knife, an impressive debut collection of short stories. For many who brave the journey to a strange country, escaping violence and persecution or simply looking for a better life, the new world can become a source of anxiety and isolation. Flutter by gina linko5/29/2023 His journey is very much entwined with Emery’s loops.ĭrawn together they must unravel their complicated connection before it’s too late. Ash’s life is governed by his single-minded pursuit of performing good Samaritan acts to atone for the death of a loved one. It appears that she’s tapping into parts of the brain typically left untouched by normal human beings.Įscaping from the hospital, Emery travels to Esperanza, the town from her loops on the upper peninsula of Michigan, where she meets Asher Clarke. They’re extremely interested in the data they collect when Emery seizes. So she practically lives in the hospital where her scientist father and an ever-growing team of doctors monitor her every move. The loops are taking their toll on her physically. To Emery they’re much more than seizures, she calls them loops-moments when she travels through wormholes back and forth in time and to a mysterious town. And in recent years they’ve consumed her life. But for as long as she can remember, she’s suffered from seizures. All Emery Land wants is to be like any other 17-year-old-to go to school, hang out with her friends, and just be normal. Her new book, Welcoming the Unwelcome: Wholehearted Living in a Brokenhearted World, invites us to embrace suffering and strengthen our resilience-to build wholehearted lives out of our broken, tender hearts. I decided to read her book, and I found it both moving and immensely helpful. She’d been through the same dysfunction that so many of us struggle with and found her own fulfilling path to enlightenment. Perhaps what she had to teach wasn’t out of reach after all. She talked about how unmanageable her life had become. I walked by it hundreds of times but never gave it a thought.īut then her interview changed my perspective-she spoke about her multiple divorces and her struggles with anger and negativity. My therapist thought it would be helpful and had loaned me her copy, which sat untouched on my shelf for months. Truth is, I had one of her books, When Things Fall Apart. What she offered seemed too far out of reach for me. While she embodied enlightenment, I was wrapped in dysfunction. Buddhism represented the ultimate in spirituality, something I struggled mightily to find in myself. Until then, I was only vaguely familiar with her. These were the words of Pema Chödrön that hooked me, after accidentally discovering an interview she gave about why she became a Buddhist nun. “I became a Buddhist because I hated my husband.” Duty honor country speech5/29/2023 Army about the life and military career of General MacArthur.
